Soapstone

Long the standard used in educational and commercial settings, this stone is very accommodating in the kitchen. It is non-porous and stain-resistant. Although it is soft and does scratch, these scratches are easily sanded down with fine sandpaper and with a regular application of mineral oil, they “disappear.” This is a natural stone composed mainly of mineral talc that gives the stone its smooth feel. Soapstone ranges from black to gray but can sometimes have a green shade to it. Other materials in the stone can produce veining. Although softer than granite, soapstone still hold up well over the long term. It’s impervious to stains and bacteria, and exposure to chemicals will not damage it.

Soapstone can be cleaned using just a damp cloth with a mild, nonabrasive soap and avoid cleaners with harsh abrasive chemicals.
